Rhizome
Rhizome is an online platform for the global new media art community. Their programs support the creation, presentation, discussion and preservation of contemporary art that uses new technologies in significant ways. Mailing lists serve as a forum for the exchange of opportunities and resources, and also for new media art - related discussion and critical debate. Rhizome online publications cover the new media art field, and include original writing by artists, critics, curators and journalists.
Launched in November 2001, the Rhizome Commissions Program makes financial support available to artists for the creation of innovative new media artwork via panel - awarded commissions. Requests for proposals (RFPs) will change from year to year to reflect new developments in technology and the current cultural environment.
Founded in 1999, the ArtBase is an online archive of new media art including some 1,600 projects. Encompassing software art, websites, performance and websites by artists from around the world, the ArtBase is the largest and most diverse archive of its kind, and features artist statements and biographies along with each entry. The TextBase contains the discussion and critical writing that has passed through Rhizome's mailing lists which were both founded in 1996.
The organization takes its name from the botanical term for an underground stem that connects plants into living networks, a metaphor for the organization's non-hierarchical structure.
