Everybody Loves A Scene
New Rhodes's second album, "Everybody Loves A Scene", is the sound of a band quietly growing in confidence - vigorous, energetic songs detailing the highs and lows of youth. Nearly the entire album sounds tailor-made for the indie disco, the exceptions being the doleful 'Bells of St John' and 'I'll Wait For You By The Coast'. The breathless pace definitely works in the band's favour, as lyrically the songs are less than inspiring - although they do at least avoid the pretentiousness and dodgy rhymes of a number of their contemporaries.
The album is also a remarkably restrained piece of work, with no extraneous elements - there are no guest musicians and not a single note that sounds unnecessary. The lead single, 'The Joys of Finding and Losing That Girl' is one of the standout songs of the album; scratchy chords accompany a list of relationship platitudes - 'take some time and see how it goes . . . we met that night and I saw it in her eyes,' with the speaker eventually admitting that he was 'wrong again'. Then comes the jangling, sing-a-long chorus that has already made this an alternative radio favourite. Superb.
Overall this is an impressive album that promises great things for the band's forthcoming live shows.
